Intern Terminations

Monica G. - Apr 13, 2020
Back to Ask the Experts

We are a federal contractor and we hire many paid Interns throughout the year. A recent discussion came up regarding best practices when ending internships and whether they should be coded as involuntary or voluntary terminations and the possible impact to our AAP reporting.

Is there a preferred or best practice to follow when terminating Interns due to the end of the internship? Should it be involuntary because they are not “choosing” to end the internship? Or should it be considered voluntary because the expectation is that an internship by nature is a temporary position?
