March is Women’s History month which provides a time to commemorate and encourage the study and celebration of the vital role of women in American history – especially the workplace. Women have come a long way since the 1980s. Back then, women earned 55 cents for every dollar a man earned and only half of all women participated in the workforce. However, women still have a long way to go:

  • Only 23% of C-Suites are made up of women (Korn Ferry)
  • For every 100 men promoted and hired to manager, only 72 women are promoted and hired (McKinsey)
  • Men end up holding 62 percent of manager-level positions, while women hold just 38 percent (McKinsey)
  • For every 100 entry-level men who are promoted to manager, just 68 Latinas and 58 Black women are promoted (McKinsey)

Women still lag behind men which makes no sense. Fortune 500 companies with at least three female directors have seen their return on invested capital increase by at least 66%, return on sales increase by 42%, and return on equity increase by at least 53% (Fortune). Women account for 50% of the workforce, but only 23% in higher C-Suite positions. Statistics like these highlight the need for change in the workforce. Companies need to start looking at women in the workforce as a necessity to diversify their workforce and increase revenue.

So how can you recruit more women today?

Of course looking inward is the first place you should focus to promote women from within. If you are lacking women in your workforce, start by reaching out to more women-oriented community partners. Circa has more than 2,000 community partners that are focused on recruiting women.

One of our community partners YWCA Southeast Wisconsin (SEW) is part of a national network with a mission to eliminate racism and empower women. YWCA Southeast Wisconsin provides a number of resources and programs to the community such as employment readiness, adult education, and personal financial management. Many of our participants visit YWCA Southeast Wisconsin specifically for assistance with creating resumes and searching for employment, earning their high school credentials and financial coaching.
