December 2019 was the 22nd consecutive month that there were more job openings than job seekers, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics last week. This data shows the competitive market that employers are up against when trying to find qualified candidates. You can no longer post your job and just wait for the people to come. There are too many job openings to hope that the qualified candidate you are looking for is going to find your job. Human Resources needs to shift their focus on being more proactive in finding the right candidates.

To get you started, here are some ideas on how you can proactively find candidates:

1. Resume Database Searches:

One way to get creative when looking for a candidate is using a resume database search. 2. Market on Social Media:

Social media can help a lot when you have new job openings. You always want to make sure your job can be easily shared on social but additionally share it with your employees. Invite them to share it in alumni groups or interest groups on social media to attract more candidates to apply.

3. Connect with Community Partners:

Community partners can provide you with connections to people you may not have even known would be a perfect candidate for your job opening! Community partners have a lot of contacts who are ready and willing to work and they also have access to passive candidates. Creating relationships with community partners provides you with insights into how their candidates can fit into your workforce and a continuous pool of applicants that you can pull from with each new job opening.

4. Attend Local Professional Events:

Local events can be a great way to meet other professionals and provide you with the opportunity to widen your sphere of influence. One of my favorite sayings is asking people “who do you know who would be a great fit?” A lot of great networking or professional events can be found through Eventbrite, Facebook, Meetup, College Alumni events, and a simple Google search. Also, expand your reach beyond network specific events to educational events as well where you can naturally meet people and make more contacts in the area.
