The Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act was enacted by the Department of Labor to help eliminate roadblocks unemployed veterans may face in obtaining employment.

Along with education and training assistance to help veterans who served our nation find jobs and support their families, VOW also offers multiple incentives for employers recruiting from the veteran community. In particular, VOW is good for business as it provides tax credit opportunities; incentivizing employers to look at the veteran community as part of their diversity initiatives.

VOW should also remind federal contractors about OFCCP compliance mandates, one of which is legislative orders for compliance such as the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act or VEVRAA, which prohibits discrimination against protected veterans.

Aside from meeting OFCCP compliance regulations, employers should look to diversity groups, such as veterans as a highly skilled workgroup. Because of their military training, veterans offer the workforce a wide–range of unique skills including leadership skills and ability to work in a team–oriented environment. And because of the very nature of their training, veterans are also usually very well–versed in the latest cutting edge technologies. Couple this with their highly organized manner and ability to work in high stress situations, hiring veterans should be at the core of any recruitment and hiring strategy.
