Valuing employees is an important part of retention and can also help decrease turnover rates. While you may have an employee retention programs in place, review the strategies below to determine if there is anything else you can do. You may discover that, for the most part, it does not take a lot of work or involve a large budget. Sometimes retention building programs are simple things you can start doing today; where employees feel they have a vested interest in the success of your business and become more productive.

Treat employees like stakeholders. When employees view their work as more than just a “job,” you will find that they are more vested in not only their success, but the success of the business. By engaging employees in business decisions, making them feel that their individual participation counts, you will create an environment that is more inclusive, productive and ultimately more profitable.

Make team building an everyday priority. You may schedule meetings with your employees monthly, quarterly or annually. This is a great way to report on company performance and meet as a team. Do not relegate team building to periodic meetings, however. Engage your employees as often as possible. Encourage regular meetings between divisions, cross divisional meetings or schedule lunches and events where employees can interact and share ideas.

You may also want to consider using internal intranets to further idea–sharing. Intranets are a terrific tool to recognize employee successes. Post an employee of the month. Highlight awards and recognitions. Set up contests and other programs that will leverage your team building efforts.

Make your employees successful. Training employees drives multiple results. It makes employees more skilled at their jobs, can ramp up productivity and is also a terrific recruitment tool. Training programs can be as simple as employees mentoring each other. You can also look at scheduling internal workshops with industry experts, where you focus on key technologies and new platforms the company is using. You may want to encourage employees to participate or attend seminars and online workshops that are relevant to their jobs. Some of these can be free of charge, while others may require a budget. These are all effective ways to build up your workforce.

Make your company a positive and fun place to work. While the main focus of your business is to drive employees to meet business goals, making your company a great place to work will drive success, retention and recruitment. You can do this in simple ways such as observing seasonal occasions like Halloween, where employees can bring their kids to “trick or treat.” Small events, like setting–up a holiday lunch for observations like Thanksgiving, are also a great way to bring a sense of fun to the workplace.
